[edit] Architecture

A Recording platform consists of hardware and software. The hardware can consists of a chassis (mostly a commercial off-the-shelf hardware can be used) and one or more input cards for analogue, digital or trunk tapping.

The software of a Recording platform is usually the same for small and large configuration, only the number of recording channel licenses determines the size of the configuration.
The scaling takes place at 3 levels:

  • within a stand-alone recording system
  • within a server/satellite architecture
  • within a multi-site environment.

[edit] Stand-alone recording system

A stand-alone recording system consists of one server with all hardware and software and a web-browser for accessing the sytem.

[edit] Service/Satellite architecture

A Server/Satellite architecture configuration consists of a server chassis, and one or more satellite chassis.

[edit] Multi-site environment

For a multi site recording solution with central storage, there are two possibilities:

  • Stand-alone Recording Servers on each location, with archiving to 1 central location
  • Recording Satellites in each location, with a central Recording Server.

With a central archive location (e.g. EMC), all archiving of individual recording systems is done to one location. The maximum number of channels is virtually unlimited as additional individual recording system can be added with archiving to a central storage device.
With satellites on remote locations, the complete configuration acts as one Server/Satellite recording system.

Another distinction, which should be considered, is rather your call recording client application is web-based, or a true client server application. While the image shows a web-based interface, a careful evaluation of security risks in this set up is highly advisable. Consulting with multiple vendors, as well as your IIS/IT team, is a good first step.
